Jay Brinkmann
Vice President
Research and Economics

Jay Brinkmann is Vice President of Research and Economics for the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA), where his responsibilities include economic forecasting, mortgage industry analysis, benchmarking of industry profitability and providing support for legislative and regulatory initiatives.

A native of New Orleans, Brinkman began his career as a press secretary on Capitol Hill and then served as the deputy chief of staff to David Treen, former governor of Louisiana. He then entered the world of banking, joining the commercial group of Premier Bank in Baton Rouge, La. He later joined the business school faculty at the University of Houston where he specialized in financial institution regulation and the development of the energy derivatives markets in the 1990s.

In 1997, he moved to Washington to work for Fannie Mae in the development of the company's risk-based capital requirements for credit guaranty fee pricing and in interest-rate risk management for the company's large mortgage portfolio. He joined MBA in early 2001 to build its commercial real estate research efforts. The following year he was placed in charge of MBA's research group.

Brinkman has published articles on bank regulation and capital requirements in various academic journals and in The Wall Street Journal. He frequently is quoted in newspapers and magazines across the country on real estate topics and has been interviewed on cable channels such as CNN and Bloomberg News.
